You might know that the power of many fertilizers is related to chelation, but when was the last time you really thought about what chelates do? Here’s a quick overview of chelates and how they can help plants maximize nutrient efficiency:
Chelating agents affect the bonds between ions and molecules. In nature—i.e., in your fields—high organic soils and phosphorous naturally bond to micronutrients. This forms a complex bond that prohibits plants from absorbing micronutrients.
To help solve this problem, fertilizers use chelates.
- Ortho-para EDDHA chelate forms an incomplete bond around positively charged nutrients. Nutrients in a fertilizer formula that get chelated with ortho-para EDDHA are left open to bind with negatively charged soil components. This makes them insoluble for uptake by plants.
- Ortho-ortho EDDHA chelate fully protects positively charged nutrients, making them soluble for uptake by plants. This chelating agent is able to replace the complex bond that holds micronutrients with a simple bond. This frees the agents in the fertilizer to the roots, then repeats the process on nutrients already present in the soil.
As you might guess, ortho-ortho EDDHA chelate can make a big difference to crop health. It has been shown to improve yields and root mass for a range of crops. This type of chelate is available in Levesol, which is exclusive to West Central.
