In November, CropLife Magazine featured an article about STI Customized, a custom seed treatment service provided by West Central. STI Customized is an alternative to pre-packaged seed treatments that allows you to tailor the blend of seed treatments to fit specific needs.
Let’s go into more detail on what having a custom blend means for both retailers and growers.
“It allows us to provide specific value to specific locations. We do run a couple different products of STIs sometimes at the same location at the same time, but we know every farmer’s needs are different, and it helps us to fill a role to be able to fulfill that need for the farmer on a more specific basis.” – Aaron Fiedler, Agronomy Sales Manager for CHS Northern Plains
One of the benefits that STI Customized provides their customers’ is saving them money. We know that farming is first and foremost a business, and what business isn’t trying to save money?
Here are the three most important reasons why using STI Customized provides an economic advantage:
1. You Avoid Over-Spending
Because the seed treatment is customized, West Central seed treatment specialist Blake Murnan says, “You can pick the amount of product you really need, and leave out the treatments that you don’t.”
With West Central seed treatments, it works like this: the retailer orders the number of units of the product that they need, then West Central fulfills the order, short filling the shuttles as appropriate. Since retailers can order exactly what they need, a lot of carry-over and inventory costs are therefore eliminated.
In other words, you can avoid wasting money on buying and storing leftovers that eventually become unusable.
2. You Avoid Over-Applying
According to Murnan, “A custom blend is better than packaged because it really allows you to zero in on a particular geography without over-applying.”
Instead of selecting a prepackaged seed treatment that contains a way-too-wide assortment of remedies for problems that you don’t have, you get the appropriate blend of customized treatments that you need and aren’t charged for irrelevant product.
“Our STI Customized insecticide treated beans have not needed to be sprayed for aphids,” said Bohn. “Meanwhile, all our neighboring fields have been sprayed once, if not twice.”
3. You Avoid Human Error
Since STI Customized uses computerized blending procedures, retailers get the exact products they order and do not have to spend more money purchasing additional seed treatment for reapplication. Instead of mixing the products by hand, the formula is put into a computer, increasing the measurement accuracy and reducing the labor costs for both mixing and cleaning up.
We know nobody’s perfect, and we also know how frustrating it can be to have to start over from square one. STI Customized can help reduce that frustration, and perhaps more importantly, the monetary waste of having to reapply.
There’s a lot of exciting news about STI Customized we want to share with you, so stay tuned.
