The Leaders of In-Furrow Technology (LIFT) program, led by West Central in partnership with BASF Corporation, Dow AgroSciences, FMC and Nufarm, educates the agricultural industry about the benefits of an in-furrow application system that includes:
- A total program of crop nutrients
- Plant health products
- Fertilizer compatible insecticides
- Customized seed treatments
Agriculture by definition is the production of food, fiber, fuel, and medicines to sustain human life. However, modern agriculture now draws from a smaller group of producers and a finite land base to produce the materials for a growing population. In order to keep up with world demands, the agriculture industry continues to investigate ways to increase production efficiency in ways that emphasize sustainability and environmental consciousness.
In the area of plant nutrition, there have been recent developments with fertilizers possessing new or different combinations of plant food analyses with advancements in the science of formulating fertilizers. Many opportunities still exist in providing the right amount of the right nutrients at the right place and time. Starter fertilizer was one of the first attempts to recognize that nutrients placed close to the developing seedling can provide the young plants with easy access to important nutrients at a relatively stressful time. Starter fertilizers take advantage of placement, formulation, and timing to provide developing seedlings with important nutrients when and where they need them.
Modern liquid formulations are more easily and conveniently metered and are also capable of being placed in the furrow with the seed. This has opened the door for the ultimate in early seedling access to important nutrients. Placing nutrients in the furrow with the seed means immediate access to certain macro and micronutrients that assist with the enzymatic breakdown of seed starches resulting in quicker access to energy reserves and faster germination and emergence. Additionally, placement in the furrow requires minimal additional iron or plumbing on the planter vs a more traditional 2 x 2 placement.
When one considers the agriculture revolution of the last century, there were significant crop yield advancements made due to major advancements in farming equipment, fertilizers, pest control products, genetics, and most recently genetic engineering. Over the next century we will be asked to continue this agricultural revolution and this will certainly require continued synergies across agricultural arenas. In-furrow placement of crop inputs fits into this strategy perfectly when you consider that it not only provides excellent placement opportunity for nutrients, but it also provides a mechanism for the placement of other important synergistic crop inputs including fungicides, insecticides, and/or bio-stimulants to provide for optimum seedling protection.
Overall, the LIFT program of in-furrow placement of crop inputs allows growers to gain access to an environmentally friendly and sustainable source of increased nutrient use efficiency for more consistent starter fertilizer responses that leads to a higher crop yield.
